FAQ

How does the Introduction to Alaska Digital Resources: Opening Your Info Conduit work?

This is a self-discovery program that encourages participants to take control of their own learning and utilize their lifelong learning skills through exploration and PLAY. Participants are encouraged to work together and share with each other their discoveries, techniques and "how to's" both in person and through their blogs. In addition you can contact the team.

How do I access the electronic resources?

You should have direct click-and-go access to all the resources listed here. If you are asked for and id and/or password, call 1-800-440-2919 from within Alaska to get the appropriate passwords. You can also fill out the Alaska Library Network Help Form to get the "click and go" access you should have within Alaska. It is important to fill out this form from the computer asking for a password to access Digital Pipeline databases.

If you have other questions about access, contact the team.

Who can participate in the course?

-Alaska academic, public, and school library and teaching staff regardless of position and status (full and part time).
-Alaska public library trustees, Friends, and Library Foundation members.

If you are not a member of the above groups, you are welcome to follow along.

How long do I have to complete the Course and how much time will it take?

The program will begin March 5, 2012 and end May 31, 2012. This includes 10 weekly lessons, with an additional two weeks to complete assignments and do some extra playing around with resources of special interest. Since this is a self-directed learning program, you decide how much time you need to complete the lessons. Some participants may choose to devote one hour per week; it can be broken up into 15 minutes a day. Library Directors are encouraged to give staff work time to complete the program. Participants who do the program at home or on their own time may elect to spend more time with the lessons.

How do I track my progress for the Introduction to Alaska Digital Resources?

All participants in the Challenge will keep a blog to track their progress. A minimum of one posting per lesson is required, but we hope you'll have more than that to blog about!

I don't feel comfortable with my colleagues reading my blog. Can I participate anonymously?

Yes, you can choose a "screen name" for your blogging identity if you want to remain anonymous. However, you need to share your blog information with the course instructors so they can track your progress. We will keep your blog identity confidential.

If you are not taking this class either for continuing ed credit or for the UAA course, you do not need to register your blog.

What if I need help? Who can I call?

Since this program is self-directed, you are encouraged to work with colleagues along your journey of discovery. Often you will find your questions answered by checking out other Participant Blogs. You can also contact team instructors (Ann, Daniel, Freya, Ginny, Jonas and Robin)  for help.

Can I receive college credit for this?

Yes! You may register for 1 college credit if you are doing the program between March 5, 2012 and May 31, 2012. All blog posts and the final project are due no later than May 31, 2012. You must register separately with UAA Online by March 11 if you want to do this for credit. If you are interested in signing up after the online deadline contact Ann (annmorgester@gmail.com)  before March 25 and we will see if there are spaces left - all work must still be completed by May 31.

Will I receive Continuing Education (CE) Contact Hours for this?

Yes! If you work in a library. This class is eligible for continuing education contact hours towards the total required for Public Library Assistance Grants, even if you don’t take it for UAA credit. You’ll need to register your blog with the course instructors and complete the entire course.  Contact Aja Razumny or Patience Frederiksen at the Alaska State Library if you have any questions about this option.

Is there a course hashtag to use with Twitter?

If you use Twitter, you are welcome to use the hashtag #adrintro. The use of Twitter is NOT required for this class and should be considered a secondary channel although instructors may lurk there.
